Hazen Pingree T-Shirt

Hazen S. Pingree was a four-term Republican mayor of Detroit from 1889-1897 and, later, became the 24th Governor of Michigan from 1897-1901.  Though Pingree was a social reformer who battled against corporations and was an early leader of the Progressive Movement, he is mostly commonly known by his nickname, “Potato Patch Pingree.”

Pingree got this nickname during the depression in 1893, during which he began opening empty lots to garden farming. During this time Pingree also expanded public welfare programs, initiated public works for the unemployed, built new schools, parks, and public baths, which is know as the “potato patch plan.”
